My name is Robin Trewartha and I work as a freelance chartered psychologist around the South-east of England and East Anglia. This Web Site is a personal resource for family and any other Trewarthas around on the ’Net who may be wondering which of us pinched this dot.com name.
Although my name labels my Cornish roots, I was born in Devon in 1947. For 18 years I lived in a small village called Ide, close to the City of Exeter, but far enough away for it to be a separate community.
I was the youngest of three, with an older brother, Mark, and a sister, Angela. My father, who died in 1981, was brought up in Newton Abbot, in Devon. My parents met in Chapel Porth, near St Agnes, as my mother, Mary Colman, lived there with her parents, Thomas and Ada Colman, close to her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Beck née Bennett from Yorkshire.
My father is connected to Chapel Porth through his mother’s family – the Lawrences. My great great grandfather, Mark Lawrence, was Captain of the Wheal Lawrence mine not far from Wheal Coates. Our Trewarthas all have Truro-based connections as well with my paternal grandfather being a local trader.
Wheal Coates: home of the ‘Norkins’, (in memory of my mother, Mary Clark (1920 – 2012).
At the age of 11 I attended Exeter School, in Heavitree, between 1958–1965 and completed undergraduate and graduate studies at Swansea University to become a probation officer (PO). I was married shortly before starting in the probation service. Our two children, Alan (1969) and Jane (1972) arrived during the time I was working as a PO. This continued for for ten years in the north of England and, in 1979, I transferred to the NSPCC to work as a child protection officer. Four years later I moved to Dundee University to teach on their Graduate Social Work programme. When that contract finished, I remained in Scotland working on a freelance basis in social work and adult education until 1996.
I married Christina (Mason), now my second wife, from our home in Longforgan, By-Dundee in August 1993
I lived and worked in London from 1996 to 2012 having retrained and qualified as a counselling supervisor and chartered psychologist, that is C Psychol with the British Psychological Society (BPS) as well as a Registered Counselling Psychologist with the Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC)..
Since 2012, I have been semi-retired working from my home in and around Attleborough until finally settling in Watton in 2017.
Hi Robin,
I hope you’re well. I’m new to all this family history. I started looking back at my roots late last year (07). My dad is called Ivor Trewartha Grimley. His mum was Gladys Trewartha. Her father, John Trewartha and his father William Henry Carbis Trewartha. I had much of the information but got more detail from Mike’s website, very useful. I guess there’s some relationship in there somewhere. I was born in Halifax and many of the family come from West Yorkshire, Hebden Bridge area. You can google or wikopedia abit of my background history. Great to be a part of something all be it very small. Great website by the way.
Regards
Martyn

hi there my grandmother was born edith trewartha she was born in 1918 in barrow in furness so its far far from cornwall her father was albert trewartha but also comes up as albert merrit on some searches
regards andrew bailey
Thanks for your information about y our grandmother, Andrew. The cornishmen got into every corner of the UK and travelled the world – especially as the engineering skills of some were in such high demand. I used to work in Durham and once drove into a densely wooded and isolated part of the county only to bump into a Cornish Engine House – evidence of the travelling engineers, I think! I don’t know if you’ve searched the various ‘lines’ of Trewarthas in the hyperlinks on the web site in search of your Albert. I do not recall one from the 20th century but my memory is not what it was Anyway, good luck in your own searches and come and see us again.

Trying to reach someone so I can register myself on this site. Seems to be no longer a way to do that. I noticed some photos on the site of relating to an ancestor of mine, and wanted to contact whoever posted the photo [Elisha Trewartha (1816-1893)]. I think I have some relevant photos. Thanks. Greg Michell
Hi Greg – you are right, the “Register” link was a little obscure (you had to click “log in” and then you got the option). I’ve added a direct “Register” link under the login form now
Recently visited Cornwall and Devon and visited Trevellas.
I understand My ancestors came from this region and maybe linked back to the Trevailers who lived in the Truro, redruth camborne areas
Looking for any contacts that might help me in the search for my Ancestors
Thanks’
Rodger
Hi Robin
I am very distantly connected to the Trewartha family, through Sarah Malvina Gray, who was married to Sydney Trewartha (Family F117). Sarah was descended (4th generation) from my ancestor, James Leaver (b c1745 in Moulsford Berkshire).
I have recently joined WikiTree – a free Genealogy website which aims to have a single tree to connect everyone.
http://www.wikitree.com/
I have just got round to adding Sydney Arthur Trewartha and Una Marjory Kloeden (Family F273) to WikiTree. You have a rather nice picture from their wedding on your website, and I wonder if you would be prepared to give me permission to add a copy of that photo to WikiTree.
The link to Sydney Trewartha on WikiTree is
http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Trewartha-22
His profile is partially private (the biography is hidden) because, so far as I can tell, 2 of his children are living. The profile for Sydney Arthur Trewartha will also be partially private, because his wife and most of his children are also living.
Best Regards
Sue Smith
hello Robin, my husbands grandfather was William John Lawrence b.1865 Goonvrea but went to Rotherhithe/ Bermondsey with his father John b. St Agnes 1832.
My father-in law was John Charles Lawrence b.1906 died 1992 Devon.
I think we have talked before but I was wondering if you still had contact with the Lawrence side of the family in South Africa?
Hello! I am married to a Trewartha (Blair, father Doug Trewartha), and recently started looking up his family tree, which is how I encountered your website! We are located in Goderich/Clinton area of Huron County, Ontario Canada – basically, Joseph Trewartha (1808-1871) & Mary Ann Knight (1820-1862) immigrated to this area some time around 1845-1848 (not exactly sure) and the family has been here ever since. (Joseph had son John, who had son Howard, who had son Ross, who had son Doug! and here we are!)
Anyway, I noticed you mentioned some archival photos are in the tree, and in looking around, I wasn’t able to locate them. Do you know how I could get to having a look? I’m trying to get my hands on as many as possible as Ross Trewartha will be turning 90 and I would love to provide a nice little book for his birthday!
Regards
Hi Robin, remember you from Ide school in 1954 and the sweet shop your Mum ran. Thought I’d see if I could find you and first try there you are! If I remember correctly you had an older brother, mark, I think. My maiden Name was Armstrong.
Wow, Pat. Thanks for getting in touch. Apologies for the delay but I do not monitor the web site as I should. My son, Alan, is a bit more savvy about these things, these days. So, where did you get to, to end up a Clow! I remember you very well from schooldays and, indeed, from your youth club in Exeter – with your performance of As I was going to St Ives and other ditties.
I won’t give you a blow-by-blow account especially as the Web site goes into much of the family history and detail. I am currently living in Norfolk and remain a self-employed psychologist, albeit on a very part-time basis. Christina, my wife, and I are about to move again having JUST sold the house. We’ve no idea where we will end up. I am threatening to go on a gap year!
the best contact point for me now, having closed my business, is:

Best wishes, Robin
Dear Karen,
Thank you for your June message and apologies for my delayed response. The Lawrences of Goonvrea gives us a direct family link as my grandmother, on my father’s side, was Annie Lawrence of Chapel Porth. My mother, sadly now deceased, lived in Chapel Porth and Goonvrea for a number of years – with her brothers Peter and John Colman and my grandmother, Ada Colman. Her second husband was Thomas Colman. I do not know if these names mean anything, but there has to be a definite link. By the way, Mark Lawrence was a Captain in the Wheal Lawrence just off the road down to Chapel Porth. I have a painting by Rachel Mea Allen of that landscape and it is much loved!
Hope you get this after all this time and thanks for getting in touch.
